Plastic is everywhere in our life. However, we must be aware that this is a group of many different substances with a wide variety of properties, and therefore they cannot be considered the same.

The variety of uses for plastics and the relatively low cost of their production are driving the search for new applications. Most plastics are made from crude oil, although bio-based plastics are increasingly common. Whether we are dealing with thermosetting plastics or thermoplastics, they are used in construction, apparel, footwear, automotive, packaging and other products (RTV, household appliances). Plastic is also used in the medical industry and many others. ... In principle, it is not known whether it is possible to mention an industry that does not use plastic products and semi-finished products. They have been used commercially for over fifty years and the number of tons of plastics placed on the market is growing every year. In 2017, worldwide, they amounted to about 350 million tons.

A third of the 3.5 million tons of plastics consumed by the Ukrainian market is used for the production of packaging. However, the recycling rate of packaging introduced into households is very low. The problem of production, consumption and handling of plastic waste is global. The European Union and America have long begun to apply regulations aimed at minimizing the negative impact of plastic waste on the environment.

From product to waste

The plastics market is an important element of the global economy. In Ukraine, the need for plastic is about 3.5 million tons per year. The largest recipient of plastic in Ukraine is the packaging sector. It consumes 33 percent of plastic production. In turn, the next 26 percent of the plastic produced goes to the construction industry, and every tenth ton is used in the automotive industry. The consumption of plastic for the production of packaging in Ukraine is constantly increasing. In 2013-2017, this number increased by 20%. We associate plastic in the first place. queue with plastic PET bottles (polyethylene terephthalate). But their production accounts for only 14 percent of the packaging sector. In Ukraine, we use plastic for the production of reusable shopping bags, foil for food. Individual plastic products differ significantly in terms of duration of use. Some of them have been used for a very short time, while others even for several decades. However, the problem arises when a particular product or plastic packaging is no longer needed. Research shows that 75% of the plastics that have been placed on the market since the start of their production have already become waste. This is 6.3 billion tons, of which less than 10% was processed.

This means that at best, about 5 billion tons of plastic will end up in landfills, as well as in forests, waters, beaches and illegal landfills scattered around the world. It is the waste remaining in the marine environment that has the greatest impact on the environment and humans. Through the food chain, microplastics are transported to our plates. Although the exact and full spectrum of the effect on human life and health of these particles entering our body not only through the digestive tract, but also through the respiratory system and through the skin is unknown, their negative influence cannot be ruled out.

“It often happens that the packaging that is the most attractive to us and that attracts our most attention on the store shelf is very difficult to recycle. In addition, almost all plastic packaging ends up in mixed waste or, even worse, in household ovens. This is the result of consumer ignorance. We can say that manufacturers should put more effort into educating consumers on what to do with packaging after their product, ”experts say.

What does this situation mean for our market from a marketing perspective? So far, not much. This trend is becoming more and more popular in Europe, while we are just beginning to talk about it. On the other hand, this problem directly depends on the awareness of consumers and the responsibility of manufacturers who place products and packaging on the market. But often, neither one nor the other wants to give up such a convenient, but harmful plastic. Although, each of us can contribute to reducing the amount of waste generated.
