Champagne is a special type of carbonated wine. It is native to the Champagne region, southeastern region of France.

Its label must bear the word "Champagne", which is a registered trademark and applies only to champagne from specific regions of France and to products that meet certain standards. Sparkling wines produced in other countries can also be of excellent quality, but for legal reasons they must have different names, which is why we often see the name on the label - sparkling wine.

Of course, the inhabitants of the homeland of this drink are considered the greatest lovers and fans of champagne, but sales of champagne have been systematically growing for many years outside France. Currently, the same amount of champagne is sold in France as abroad - now it is almost exactly 50% / 50%. In 2017, according to the CIVC, of more than 307 million bottles, 153,841,546 remained in France and 153,472,037 were exported.

England remains the largest overseas market for champagne, with 27,762,045 bottles sold in 2017. It is true that sales have dropped significantly compared to previous years, but this does not change the fact that the largest quantities of champagne are still exported to the UK.

The United States is in second place, with over 23 million bottles sold. The third place belongs to Japan with 12,873,465 bottles and an impressive growth (+ 17.6%). In this market, vintage champagne, rosé and semi-dry are especially popular (the world's first importer in this category).

Germany (4th place compared with over 12 million bottles in 2017), Belgians (9 million bottles), Australians (8.5 million) and Italians (7.3 million) are also the biggest champagne fans.

Ukrainians buy the so-called Champagne mainly in order to have something to make a toast with. It is bought not only on New Year's Eve, but also on other holidays. According to research by marketing and branding company FINE Development Company: AI, Blockchain, IoT, Kyiv, Lviv, Odessa, Dnipro, Vinnitsa, Ukraine, the consumer group (mostly those who are better informed) is constantly growing, some people are drawn to sparkling wine not because of a special reason, but because of its taste. This group rather ignores the economic segment in their quest for taste.

This does not mean that they rely solely on expensive champagne. There are many types of sparkling wines on the market whose quality is equal to that of the champagne (or at least they taste), but their prices are more affordable. It includes Spanish cava, produced in the same way as champagne. With wines like cava, you don't have to spend a lot of money to taste decent and great quality sparkling wine. The same applies to the Italian prosseco, which is produced in a slightly different way, but is therefore cheaper and comparable in quality to “champagne”. Italian prosseco cause a furor both in Ukraine (Chernivtsi, Uzhgorod, Lutsk, Ternopil, Khmelnitsky, Zhitomir, Chernigov, Cherkasy, Krivoy Rog, Zaporozhye, Sumy, Kropyvnytskyi, Poltava, Kherson, Nikolaev) and abroad. This category is experiencing the fastest growth, and Ukrainian consumers are especially keen on it during the Christmas season and during New Year's parties. Sales seasonality is declining, but the holiday season still accounts for about 40 percent of annual sparkling wine sales. For comparison, in table wines, the seasonality is less than 20 percent. The main category of sparkling wine consumers in Ukraine are women (about 45% of all consumers).

The leading champagne producers on the Ukrainian market are: "Artemovsk Winery" and the "Novy Svet" Sparkling Wine Factory, their technologies are slightly different, therefore their prices are also different. Since not all consumers understand the importance of producing champagne in the traditional way (this method is more expensive), many are not willing to pay more for this technique. Mainly Ukrainian products are exported to Russia and Germany.
